Funny, moving, uplifting and at times downright bizarre, Lost In Blue is a tour de force of contemporary storytelling fuelled by playful live sound technology.
Annie, an aspiring young painter and her mother Sarah come back to Birmingham after years away from home. Soon after, on her 18th birthday, Annie discovers that she may have been responsible for the accident that has left her dad Paul in a coma for the last 15 years.
Annie’s mom is struggling to keep things together, her aunt Candy eats optimism for breakfast and her new friend Leonard talks mainly to pigeons. Meanwhile, her dad Paul is hiding out in the bedroom of Vincent Van Gogh, nursing a terrible secret while the clock ticks and his family – and Van Gogh himself – begin to question how long the machines should keep Paul holding on.
Hilarious and raw by turns, Lost In Blue is “a beautiful and intricate story” (★★★★ Three Weeks) with a live looped score, written and performed by award-winning theatre maker Debs Newbold. “Daniel Kitson meets Julie Walters” (Ruth E. Cockburn).

A “beautiful and intricate story about a teenager’s relationship with her mother, with her father, who is in a coma, and with art” (Three Weeks), Lost In Blue is Debs’ second collaboration with the director John Wright. It previewed at The Roundhouse, London, before going on to a 4 & 5 star run at Summerhall at the Edinburgh Fringe and a UK tour.
In 2022 Lost In Blue ran for two weeks at the Lion & Unicorn, London, garnering two prestigious award nominations: the OffWest End (OFFIE) Award for Lead Performance in a Play and a Standing Ovation Award.
In 2016, Lost In Blue won the the Summerhall Acting Award at the Edinburgh Fringe.
